As one of the first operas written by G & S, the Sorcerer has never been as popular as some of their later work and the songs are not the most memorable, however that was until Winterbourne had a go at it and turned it into a very lighthearted comic production. The part of John Wellington Wells was originally written for Sullivan's brother, in this production the honours went to Alan Dove who improved with every entrance, as did all the principals. The duets from Alexis and Aline were impressive throughout as was Peter Shore as the Vicar . The singing from the chorus was of the highest standard and excellent acting backed this at all times. The comedic double act of the night however must go to Mrs Partlet and her daughter Constance who kept us smiling throughout this production and the facial expressions of Mrs Partlet when they were discussing her dubious attributes were superb. Due to illness producer Katherine Reed had to learn the part of Mrs Partlet within a week, both her production and her performance were sheer joy.

I am always filled with admiration for your directors coping with so many cast members on such a limited stage area and this was no exception but your attractive set, with rostra made the most of the available space. Added to the beautiful costumes and atmospheric lighting and effects, a truly 'magical' experience was offered to us ull; a foretaste for the coming panto season and most acceptable. All your principals performed well and I was particularly impressed with the vocal quality of the male principals and the general ensemble work. As for the wonderful village 'band' I think this should be a trade mark from now on -I can't wait for a repeat performance! A special word of praise must go to your producer who stepped in to play what I consider the funniest Mrs Partlet I have seen. Such elongation and I shall long remember that screamingly funny episode with the toffee which was classic comedy.
