“Cinders the Pantical”

I should like to send my sincere congratulations to all members of Winterbourne Musical Theatre for the splendid evening of entertainment and fun they presented last night. What a first night! My congratulations and admiration also extend to Maggie who conceived, wrote and directed the whole production – a mammoth undertaking, but carried off with great success.

There was so much for us to enjoy: such as the delightfully youthful and attractive Cinders and Wills, splendid characters of Tuggleton Green, hilarious comedic cameos, memorable music, with excellent accompaniment throughout and above all. complete and utter commitment from the whole cast. Bravo!

G & S operas, which are well known to your company, worked well with Maggie’s up-dated lyrics and how we appreciated the impressive “Entry of the Peers” with trumpet voluntary at the start. Rustic comedy abounded and certainly caused much amusement, but I believe it was the ingenious extra scenes which lifted this “Pantical” onto a higher plane. Particularly amusing were the ‘”X Factor” and “British Army” inserts and the Tuggleton Morris Dancers!

Naturally we did not wish to laugh all the time and a movingly sung “Silent Night” reminded us that we were approaching Christmas, that most sacred of festivals. Pantomime was also alive and well throughout, again reminding us of the season and ! heartily commend the characters who upheld the tradition with such expertise, such as the Baron. Baroness, the Ugly Sisters and of course Butlins. As mentioned earlier, the romantic story of Cinderella was beautifully told and sung by the two main actors but also enhanced by the Queen and Philip – great characterisations.

Choice of music complemented each scene, with the more up-beat numbers introducing a contemporary feel to performances. Costumes were colourful, attractive and highly inventive, and enhanced each scene weil.

A special mention must be made of Evangeiine the Tuggleton Fairy, who expertly linked each scene seamlessly and was still able to conduct the company in their concerted number! Well done!
